How to find a name you want to keep
- Choose a fantasy ancestry style and a name format.
- Set a character limit for the game, username or character sheet you’re using.
- Generate a batch. Copy a name or save several, then download your shortlist.
A BG3 name for your own custom character
Start with the person you want to roleplay. A name that works in spoken dialogue is often more useful than a complicated spelling. Read each result as an introduction, a warning and a greeting from a friend. If it feels awkward in all three, keep looking.
The ancestry selector changes both given names and bynames. Human-inspired results are compact and familiar; elf-inspired results use flowing syllables; dwarf-inspired results use firmer sounds and craft imagery. Tiefling-inspired results include virtue words, while halfling-inspired results lean toward small places and household details. These are authored creative styles, not authoritative cultural descriptions.
Match the sound to the role you want to play
A bard might prefer a name that is easy to announce, a rogue might choose an everyday cover, and a paladin might keep an inherited surname. None of those choices is a rule. A plain name can make a dramatic character more interesting, and a grand name can become a joke the party remembers.
The tool does not infer gender, class, background or personality from ancestry. You can combine a generated given name with a surname you already use, or select a different style simply because the sound fits. Keep the character-limit setting close to the space you have available in the actual game interface.
Make a shortlist before you start
Save several names, then add a one-line note beside each in your own character document. You may discover that the quiet name fits better than the dramatic one once you know the character’s motivation. Download the shortlist if you want to compare it outside this browser.
This page creates original combinations for custom characters. It does not list companions, copy official dialogue or use official concept art. Its harbor illustration depicts an invented setting and should not be read as a map or a scene from the game.

Frequently asked questions
Is this Baldur’s Gate 3 name generator official?
No. This independent naming aid is not affiliated with Larian Studios or Wizards of the Coast. It offers original ideas for custom characters, not official names or lore.
Does it cover every BG3 ancestry?
No. The first version offers five distinct creative styles. They are starting points rather than a complete catalog of the game’s playable ancestries.
Is this generator free?
Yes. Generate, copy and save names without an account. Generation happens in your browser and does not call an AI service.
Will my saved names stay here?
Saved names are kept in this browser’s local storage, separately for each generator. Clearing site data removes them; private browsing or blocked storage may keep them only for this visit. Download your shortlist to keep a copy.
Are generated names guaranteed to be unique?
No. A batch contains no duplicates, but a name can appear again later or already exist elsewhere. Search a shortlist before using it for a public project.
